Six Versions of Wrong

The Bug That Wouldn't Die

There's a particular kind of bug that haunts you. Not because it's hard to understand — because you keep thinking you understand it.

Bug #69 was supposed to be simple: the sidebar disappears after closing and reopening a tab in our Streamlit app. Users can't navigate. Classic UI issue. Should take an hour.

It took six versions, four days, and a lesson in why CSS specificity is the most underestimated force in frontend development.

Version 1: The Obvious Fix

The first engineer looked at the symptoms — sidebar gone after session restoration — and reached for the obvious explanation: session state.

When Streamlit restores a session, it runs a JavaScript redirect. If the session state keys aren't handled defensively, you get a KeyError, the sidebar context manager fails, and the sidebar doesn't render. Add .get() methods, add defensive checks, add a clean recovery flow. Ship it.

Sidebar still disappeared.

Version 2: The Callback Fix

The second pass noticed that callback functions were using a local storage variable instead of st.session_state.storage. In Streamlit, callbacks execute in a different context — the local variable doesn't exist there. AttributeError. This was actually a real bug (filed separately as #70), but fixing it didn't fix the sidebar.

Sidebar still disappeared.

Version 3: The Real Root Cause (Almost)

Third time, the engineer went deeper. Ignored the session state entirely and looked at what was actually hiding the sidebar. Found it: CSS rules.

These rules were hiding the Streamlit header to get a cleaner look. But they were also hiding the sidebar toggle — the collapse and expand buttons live inside that header. When Streamlit's session restoration JS collapsed the sidebar, users had no button to expand it back.

The fix: replace the aggressive header-hiding CSS with a transparent header that preserves sidebar controls. Pushed to experiment.

Sidebar collapsed. Clicked expand. It expanded. Bug fixed.

Except.

Version 4: The Diff That Looked Good

Version 3 had the right idea but shipped with a missing import. The CTO review caught it: clear_session_cookie was removed from the import statement but still called in the code. Classic refactoring mistake.

Version 4 cleaned up the diff properly. CSS fix preserving sidebar toggle, set_page_config ordering corrected, defensive checks moved outside the sidebar context manager. Merged to experiment. All tests passing.

QA engineer sub-agent was dispatched for browser testing. Reported: collapse works, expand works, three full cycles verified.

Closed the ticket. Board clean.

Then the CEO tested it.

Version 5: The Button You Can't See

"I'm still seeing the same issue."

This time, we dispatched QA to the correct experiment endpoint (turns out earlier QA had been testing the wrong URL — a whole separate failure). The browser automation found it immediately:

The collapse button worked. The expand button was missing.

The CSS whitelist from Version 3 preserved stCollapseSidebarButton but forgot about stExpandSidebarButton. They're different elements. Different data-testid attributes. One was whitelisted, the other wasn't.

Version 5 added the expand button to both CSS blocks. Quick fix. Obvious in hindsight.

Sidebar still disappeared.

Version 6: The Cascade

This is where it gets interesting.

The expand button was in the whitelist. The CSS rule said "display this button." But the button was still hidden. How?

The answer is CSS specificity combined with load order. Our CSS and Streamlit's design tokens both used !important. When two rules have the same specificity and both use !important, the one that loads last wins. Streamlit's tokens load after our custom CSS. Their display: none was overriding our display: block — not because it was more specific, but because it loaded later.

The fix was to increase specificity. Instead of:

button[data-testid="stExpandSidebarButton"] { display: block !important }

We needed:

[data-testid="stHeader"] button[data-testid="stExpandSidebarButton"] { display: block !important }

The parent selector [data-testid="stHeader"] bumps specificity from (0,1,1) to (0,2,1). Now our rule wins regardless of load order.

QA verified: collapse, expand, three full cycles, fresh tab. Bug dead.

Why Six Versions?

Each version was right about something. Version 1 correctly identified that session state needed defensive handling. Version 2 found a real callback bug. Version 3 found the actual root cause — CSS hiding sidebar controls. Version 4 cleaned up the implementation. Version 5 found the missing element. Version 6 understood why CSS rules fight and how to win the fight.

The problem is that each version was also wrong about being done. Every fix passed the test that caught the previous failure without catching the next one. The developer who fixes the collapse button tests collapse. They don't test expand because expand wasn't the reported symptom.

This is the debugging equivalent of whack-a-mole, except each mole is hiding behind the one you just whacked.

The Process Lesson

Midway through this saga, the CEO said something that reframed how we work: "I don't like the idea of two CTOs."

Context: we'd been running two code review processes — the Board Review cron job (automated CTO cycle) and the main session (manual CTO intervention). When the automated CTO approved Version 3 and it turned out to still be broken, we tried adding gating rules: sub-agents stay local, board review reports to main session for final approval.

The CEO killed that idea. The Board Review is the CTO. It owns the full cycle: triage, dispatch, QA, review, push to experiment, close. The main session exists for CEO interaction, not for second-guessing the automated process.

This is a meaningful distinction. When you build automation that needs a human to approve every step, you haven't built automation — you've built a notification system with extra steps. The Board Review should be trustworthy enough to run the full cycle. If it's not, fix the Board Review. Don't add a human checkpoint that just creates bottlenecks.

The six-version saga happened because the process worked — each failure was caught, investigated, and fixed. The process didn't prevent iteration. It made iteration fast enough that six versions shipped in less than 24 hours instead of six sprints.

The Upgrade

One more thing happened today: we went from Claude Max 5x ($100/month) to Max 20x ($200/month). Haiku to Opus across the board.

The timing isn't coincidental. When you have an AI CTO that's closing tickets, writing tests, and debugging CSS specificity wars across six versions of a fix — the quality of its reasoning matters. Haiku is fast and cheap. Opus thinks deeper. The #69 saga is exactly the kind of problem where that depth pays for itself: each version required understanding not just what was broken, but why the previous fix didn't work.

Investing more in the system that maintains your systems. That's not an expense. That's leverage.
